چکیده
1 Abstract We present results of self-consistent experiments of basin formation by extension and basin inversion through subsequent contraction. Our viscous-plastic finite element models include feedback interactions between crustal deformation, the development of local shear zones, and sedimentation and erosion. The extensional basins show a high degree of sensitivity to crustal strain softening and to surface processes. Inversion structures depend to a large part on inherited extensional geometry, previous strain softening, and on material properties.

Positive inversion of extensional footwalls in the southern Serra do Espinhaço, Brazil--insights from sandbox laboratory experiments.
Analogue experiments were carried out to get insights into the processes governing positive inversion during the foreland propagating thrust tectonics in the southern Serra do Espinhaço, a Brasiliano/Panafrican foldthrust belt in southeast Brazil. In particular, model listric half-grabens were inverted by applying contractional displacement to the footwall blocks. We investigated two different ...
متن کاملGenesis of tectonic inversion structures: seismic evidence for the development of key structures along the Purbeck–Isle of Wight Disturbance
The interpretation of a densely spaced and well-calibrated seismic grid sheds new light on the development and evolution of key regional and local structures in the Wessex Basin. The results help to resolve long-standing controversies concerning the tectonic significance of apparently anomalous outcrop patterns and the role of important, local ancillary structures with respect to the major mono...

Large-scale expressions of lunar tectonics—contractional wrinkle ridges and extensional rilles or graben—are directly related to stresses induced by mare basalt-filled basins1,2. Basin-related extensional tectonic activity ceased about 3.6 Gyr ago, whereas contractional tectonics continued until about 1.2 Gyr ago2. In the lunar highlands, relatively young contractional lobate scarps, less than ...
متن کاملKinematics of back‐arc inversion of the Western Black Sea Basin
[1] Back‐arc basin evolution is driven by processes active at the main subduction zone typically assuming the transition from an extensional back‐arc, during the retreat of a mature slab, to a contractional basin, during high‐strain collisional processes. Such a transition is observed in the Black Sea, where the accurate quantification of shortening effects is hampered by the kinematically uncl...
متن کاملDoes shallow dike intrusion and widening remain a possible mechanism for graben formation on Mars?
Shallow dike intrusion and widening was proposed several decades ago as a cause of surface faulting and graben formation on Earth. This hypothesis was subsequently applied to the spectacular linear and/or radial graben systems visible on Mars. However, a recent study has suggested that shallow dike intrusion on Mars results in contractional folding and uplift adjacent to dike walls rather than ...
